Central Marina

Located a stone’s throw from S@S Pattaya, malls don’t get more convenient than this one designed like a fisherman’s village. Though smaller, older and less glitzy than nearby Terminal 21 (see below), CentralMarina does have some stuff going for it—like a cinema, a 24-hour McDonald’s, a Big C supermarket and a Nike factory outlet (why buy the knock-off sneakers on Beach Road, when the ones here are so cheap?). Other than that, it’s filled with standard Thai mall food names like Starbucks, MK, Auntie Anne’s, Swensen’s and Pizza Hut. The best time to visit, we reckon, is after 6pm, when the strip out front comes alive with the Marina Night Market selling everything from touristy trinkets to succulent seafood, satay sticks and takoyaki balls.

Chinese Walking Street (Ban Chak Ngaeo)

About 20km south of Pattaya city, in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri, sits Chak Ngaeo, a quaint Chinese community whose origins date back more than 100 years. Visit on a Saturday from around 3-9pm and you’re in for a real treat when the Walking Street here serves up all the smells, tastes and sights as part of a weekly food market. Decorated with red lanterns, the street is lined by two-storey wooden and concrete shophouses, some of which serve as restaurants. During market time, many locals set up stalls along the street to sell snacks, cooked meals and cool drinks. These may include things like mantho (steamed Chinese buns), kanom kui chai (chives dumplings) and moo yong (fluffy shredded dried pork). Apart from all the glorious food, you can also walk around and visit sites like Chak Ngaeo Rama, an old-school wooden cinema decked out with retro movie posters, an old Chinese opera house and a Chinese shrine. Need a rest? Take a tour with a rickshaw service. Chinese New Year is another popular time to visit when the street is in full celebration mode and locals wear traditional attire.

The Commons

This is kind of like a mall for fitness lovers, combining cafe, fitness studio, shoe store, singing school and even a couple of football fields. Don’t expect to find treadmills at W / Common Studio; this chic, minimalist fitness studio promises exercise in the form of yoga, Pilates and dance, with styles spanning hip-hop through to Zumba. Head to Dripoly for good coffee, healthy(ish) Thai and Western bites (from eggs Benedict to green curry), and cold-pressed juices. Woo Store, meanwhile, is the spot to load up on sneakers and streetwear so that you look the part.

Thepprasit Road Night Market

Probably the most popular night market in town, also known as Pattaya Weekend Market, packs together stall after stall selling everything from knock-off fashion to dubious brand-name electronics. We say you’re better off coming for the sensational (and pocket-friendly) street food: seafood, noodles, spicy salads, barbecued meats, fresh juices, you name it, though finding a spot to enjoy it among the thronging crowds can be quite a challenge!

Terminal 21

Little over five minutes’ walk from S@S Pattaya, Terminal21 is a shopping haven with a difference. The mall, which started in Bangkok, is known for its quirky airport theme that promises plenty of fun photo opps, as well as stores and restaurants from all over the world. Each floor is decked out in a different theme, from Paris on the ground floor to Tokyo on the second and Hollywood on the fourth. Our favourite may well be San Francisco on the third floor, which is home to restaurant after restaurant—Thai, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian, it’s all here. Read our guide to eating around the world at Terminal21 here. As for shopping, expect to find big fashion names like Uniqlo (great for grabbing some holiday basics) and H&M, along with local names. There’s also a supermarket, Foodland, open till late, a food court for quick bites and SF Cinema.
