Take a trip down memory lane.

Publish Date: 28 August 2019

About 20km south of Pattaya city, in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri, sits Chak Ngaeo, a quaint Chinese community whose origins date back more than 100 years.

Vist on a Saturday from around 3-9pm and you’re in for a real treat when the Walking Street here serves up all the smells, tastes and sights as part of a weekly food market.

Decorated with red lanterns, the street is lined by two-storey wooden and concrete shophouses, some of which serve as restaurants.

During market time, many locals set up stalls along the street to sell snacks, cooked meals and cool drinks. These may include things like mantho (steamed Chinese buns), kanom kui chai (chives dumplings) and moo yong (fluffy shredded dried pork).

Apart from all the glorious food, you can also walk around and visit sites like Chak Ngaeo Rama, an old-school wooden cinema decked out with retro movie posters, an old Chinese opera house and a Chinese shrine. Need a rest? Take a tour with a rickshaw service.

Chinese New Year is another popular time to visit when the street is in full celebration mode and locals wear traditional attire.
