Japanese skewers and sake in the unlikeliest of locations.

Japanese grilled skewers and whiskey highballs make a potent mix at this sleek izakaya (tavern) in the unlikeliest of locations.

Along with Tropic City, Jua is responsible for turning a residential, dead-end soi in the old-school Charoenkrung neighbourhood into one of the city’s funnest party destinations.

The restaurant’s name translates to “hit me” in Thai—fitting for a venue that used to operate as a subterranean casino.

How to get there: From S@S Bangkok, your best bet is to catch a taxi. The ride should cost no more than THB100 and take about 15 minutes. Alternatively, catch the BTS at National Stadium station to Saphan Taksin, after changing at Siam, and explore the historical Charoenkrung neighbourhood. A single-journey pass will cost THB40. Jua is about 19 minutes' walk from Saphan Taksin station. From there, you can also take an Orange Flag Boat (THB15) along the Chao Phraya River to Si Phraya Pier, and walk another 4 minutes.
