Chatuchak Weekend Market, locally known as JJ Market, has grown from incredibly humble beginnings into one of the most famous markets in the world. The government established the market in 1942 in Sanam Luang. Following several relocations, it finally settled in its current location in the Chatuchak district in 1982.
The market once catered to local needs, selling everyday items and fresh produce. Over many years, it expanded in size and its range of offerings. Today, Chatuchak spans over 35 acres and boasts over 15,000 stalls split into 27 sections, attracting almost a quarter of a million visitors each weekend. It's open every Saturday and Sunday from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm.
Chatuchak has evolved into a frenetic and vibrant hub offering everything from clothing and accessories to antiques and art. Its eclectic mix of goods and unique atmosphere make it a must-visit destination during your stay in Bangkok.
Chatuchak offers a wide range of products. You'll find everything here, whether you're hunting for trendy clothes, unique souvenirs, or delicious street food. The market is divided into sections for easier navigation:
Clothing and Accessories: Explore the latest fashion trends, vintage finds, and handmade accessories.
Art and Handicrafts: Discover beautiful paintings, sculptures, and traditional Thai crafts.
Furniture and Home Decor: This section has everything from antique furniture to modern decor items.
Plants and Gardening: Find exotic plants, flowers, and gardening tools.
Books and Stationery: A paradise for book lovers with rare and second-hand books.
Pets and Pet Accessories: Adorable pets and everything you need for your furry friends.
Chatuchak is a food lover's paradise. As you drift through the market, you'll be tempted by the aroma of freshly cooked street food. Must-try items include:
Pad Thai: Thailand's famous stir-fried noodles.
Mango Sticky Rice: A sweet treat made with ripe mangoes and sticky rice.
Grilled Satay: Skewered and grilled meat served with peanut sauce.
Fresh Coconut Ice Cream: Perfect for cooling down in the tropical heat.
Thai Iced Tea: A refreshing drink to keep you energized.
Bargaining is a common practice at Chatuchak, and it's part of the fun. Here are some tips to help you get the best deals:
Start Low: Offer a price lower than you're willing to pay and negotiate from there.
Be Polite: Smile and be friendly; it goes a long way!
Walk Away: If the price isn't right, walk away. You never know; you might be called back with a better offer.
To make the most of your visit, consider our insider tips:
Arrive Early: The market gets crowded as the day progresses. Arriving early will help you beat the heat and have a more relaxed shopping experience away from the madding crowds.
